Yup, we've got the jet lag. Or at least the kids have it badly, and I've got a mild dose which is being exacerbated by being forced awake from 12-2am. Added to that, N has started being anxious about her teeth. Yes, teeth. She lost 3 teeth while in Spain, all naturally and normally and all 3 have budding adult teeth underneath them.
I, on the other hand, finally got around to going to my dentist in Spain to have my crown done, which was quite a palaver after delaying it so long. The pain was a result of severe inflammation. He also gave me the less than welcome news that the dodgy dentist I'd visited while pregnant with R, had done irreparable damage to another tooth. That was the time I went for a filling, ended up with an infection and a root canal treatment and crown. Well, the root canal wasn't properly filled and underneath has led to an abscess. The crown is poorly fitting, which means that all sorts of rubbish is seeping into the tooth and roots below, and is leading to gum and bone deterioration. Unfortunately all quite obvious from the x-rays. I'm not even going to go into the details of extraction, healing, posts, implants etc. etc. which would take at least 4 months if and when I do them if I want to do it properly. I'm in denial for the time being while we finish paying for the last lot of work.
I complained to Air France about the flight and was awarded 10,000 miles, which is not bad going. And my suitcase arrived intact as well. H and I had a discussion yesterday about flying business class for long haul. If we had more money that is one of the first luxuries I would allow myself - flying business class. Economy class is so terribly uncomfortable. In my mind it is so worth while, if you have the money spare, which we don't (those kids to educate, and the HK rentals to pay). In his mind, it isn't worth the price. What do you think?
Anyway, N is now insisting that she may have something wrong with her teeth and is demanding a dental appointment. Not just from time to time, but at least 3 times per hour. She's also taken to frantically brushing her teeth (I've said a maximum of 3 times a day to not damage the enamel) and has forsworn all sweets and food that may be bad for her teeth. Talk about obsessive. Me thinks she may be projecting some anxiety related to starting at ISF into her teeth. Then again, she may just have a cavity. Something I do think is unlikely since she's good at brushing and doesn't eat much candy and never has soft-drinks or even fruit juice.
On a more positive note - well done to fellow blogger David Biddlecombe for his initiative with the Freedom Balls - the restrictions in parks in HK is really over the top. I can understand in very busy parks on very busy occasions, but most of the parks are pretty deserted most of the time. In addition, HK is blessed with fairly responsible people, the kind of anti-social behaviour seen in parks in most other countries is just not found here. Go ahead and invite a freedom ball to a park near you!

Business - nice if you can afford it.
I had a similar experience on Air France. Lost the bags - both to and from HK. And we also missed our connection due to a terrorist alert - spending the night in a crappy hotel in Paris.
Didn't bother complaining. Don't need the air miles, as I won't be flying on AF again! Swiss to Zurich is a good one fo EU connections.
Amongst the many trade-offs when having kids is how much more it will cost you to travel subsequently. Mrs smog and I will shortly be off for a couple of weeks in the USA, and I'm prepared to pay the cost of flying First via round the world tickets, which we will use for 3 holidays over the next 12 months. I couldn't afford this for 4, but for 2 it's doable.
Manila-New York(via HK) then San Francisco, Anchorage (relatives), Dallas (friends), out to London for a quick late wedding dinner with friends. Back to HK using miles award tickets.
Then at Easter: back to London, Dubai (friends & dune buggies), Finland (ice castle), Paris and back to Hong Kong.
Then in May/June up to Osaka/Kyoto and back.
All 18 flights in First (except the intra-Europe legs which are business since they don't have First) for US$9000 each, including all taxes, plus 280,000 miles for the LHR-HKG-LHR in F.
That's worth it I reckon.
Thanks for the mention of Freedom Ball, gweipo.
I agree with your comment about how responsible people generally are in Hong Kong. As I'm sure you know, in 2003 we had a political demonstration involving around half a million people. I can't think of another country in the world where you could have a political demonstration that large without at least some violence breaking out, yet Hong Kong people demonstrated peacefully and then went home calmly when it was finished.
Despite this the government apparently thinks that Hong Kong people can't be trusted to play in the park without the sky falling in.
Me again, there's going to be another Freedom Ball 'happening' this weekend on Saturday afternoon as RTHK have asked if they can film a Freedom Ball intervention for their arts and culture program 'The Works'. The program will be shown on Tuesday at 7pm.
I'm not sure of the venue for Saturday afternoon yet as they just called me today and I'm in the process of setting it up but if you're interested in coming along let me know and I'll send you all the details tomorrow.
Yes, please let me know when and where and we'll support it as long as it doesn't conflict with anything else...
We'll be in Kowloon Park (Tsim Sha Tsui) from about 3pm, probably near the maze, if you're free.
